We all have a couple of these—bookmarked websites that we keep going back to for information and entertainment. In this day and age, the Internet is as crowded as Saturday evenings along Orchard Road. That is why content, design and usability are all the more important. We are not going to go into detail about how to create the most awesome website in this post—that we’ll leave for later—but we’ll share with you some the team’s favourite websites that never fail to get us excited.
Slate.com
“Slate is my go to site for news and culture. The topics covered here are not only comprehensive and interesting, they are also thought provoking. I particularly enjoy reading the op-eds that cover topics as varied as politics to family life.”
Salon.com “I love keeping up with current affairs and some of my favourite commentators such as Soraya Chemely write for this site. What I also like about Salon is its straightforward and easy-to-navigate layout—a must for people who want to the most important information, pronto.”
Jezebel.com “I like to read about women’s issues—not just the serious ones. This website is the smart woman’s resource for topics such as celebrity, fashion, beauty and wellbeing.”
Sweetpaul.com “Sweet Paul is a lovely website with beautifully shot photographs of food and handicrafts. Be warned: browsing this site will give you a serious sugar craving! I particularly like the Make section where Paul offers instructions in everything from entertaining to DIY décor-making.”
Apartmenttherapy.com “I confess. I’m a closet voyeur and Apartment Therapy allows me to peek inside other people’s homes. I also get to glean home décor inspirations and steal some ideas for handcrafted projects for the home.”
Refinery29.com “This is an online fashion, beauty and lifestyle resource with up to the minute updates and effective headlines. While the content is not as intelligent and comprehensive as the fashion pages of The Guardian (another favourite), I like that Refinery29 offers bite-sized pieces of infotainment accompanied by captivating graphics that most youngish women (and some men) enjoy reading about.”
Cracked.com “Cracked.com is a humour website with the most interesting articles. From interviews with fake priests to the latest fads, Cracked delivers humour and somehow makes its audience laugh with them and not at them. Nothing like a good laugh to brighten my day.”
Kotaku.com “Kotaku is where I go for all my gaming news. Even though I don’t have the time to play games anymore, I still enjoy keeping up to date with the latest games and discussing it with my friends over dinner.”
Twitch.tv “People usually go back home and watch television. For me, Twitch is my television. It generally features people that try their best to make their streams enjoyable. I enjoy the interaction and feel that it’s as entertaining as any other television program out there.”
Businessinsider.sg “When it comes to the latest in tech, business or the news in the world, Business Insider is my go to website. Topics at business insider includes tech, finance, entertainment, politics, strategy and many more. Not only are they informative, it is not boring as the writers engage their readers through thought provoking videos, infographics, etc.”
