4 Compelling Social Media Campaigns in Summer 2015

As we step into the month of September, let’s look back at some of the fascinating social media campaigns and stories from summer this year.

  1. #iLookLikeAnEngineer – Challenging gender stereotypes

Thousands of female engineers were banded together by the hashtag #iLookLikeAnEngineer, with the aim of highlighting the gender stereotyping issues surrounding the engineering industry. The hashtag, created by software engineer Isis Anchalee, was a response to several gender stereotyped comments she received after being featured in a recruitment ad by her software company.

The hashtag has since went viral and attracted over 75,000 Twitter users, with female engineers from all sectors of the industry posting pictures of themselves with the hashtag.

The iconic hashtag has successfully increased awareness of how diverse the engineering community is, and how there is not one look an engineer should have.

  1. #ShareacokeSG for SG50

In line with Singapore’s Golden Jubilee celebrations, Coca Cola released limited edition coke cans and bottles featuring commonly used Singaporean terms such as “Ah Boy”, “Auntie”, “Chiongster” and singlish phrases such as “Relak Lah” and “Makan”. Following this, the brand ran a #ShareacokeSG campaign on Twitter by encouraging fans to share pictures of their coke cans using the hashtag.

  1. Weave your Instagram shot #F21ThreadScreen

In summer, popular fashion brand Forever 21 collaborated with BREAKFAST, a New York Agency, to create a campaign that brings fans’ Instagram photos to life on a Thread Screen. The Thread Screen is a 2000-pound machine made out of 6400 mechanical spools of thread – in other words, each “pixel” on the screen is actually a 1.5inch-wide thread which will rotate around to showcase different colours.

The Thread Screen aims to increase involvement and engagement of fans with the brand, and show how fashion and technology can meld together seamlessly.

Fans all over the world shared their pictures on Instagram with the hashtag #F21ThreadScreen. These pictures will then be displayed on the Thread Screen, where each image will be cut into a short video and sent back to the hashtagger for them to share.

  1. A celebration of active women by Nike’s #Instaposter

In another similar act by Nike, Instagram pictures were brought to life in the form of posters in Moscow, Russia. The hashtag #Instaposter was created to celebrate and encourage more active women, and is part of Nike’s #betterforit campaign which supports and motivates women’s athletic journeys.

Instagram pictures tagged with the hashtag were recreated as giant street art posters and displayed around the city. The result was overwhelming more women posted their moments of pride online, with over 25,000 photos published on Instagram with the hashtag #betterforit.
